Gram-positive organisms

• Include Staphylococci, Streptococci, Enterococci, Corynebacteria, Clostridia and Listeria

Main clinical infections:       

• Staphylococci and the ß haemolytic streptococci commonly produce skin and wound infections.

• Staphylococci, Enterococci and Corynebacteria produce line related infections. 

• Clostridia can be part of the polymicrobial mixture in abdominal and gangrenous wound infections.

Usually sensitive to:

• Vancomycin

• Teicoplanin

• Gentamicin is active against many Staphylococci, but not Streptococci or Enterococci.

• Cephalosporins (except Listeria and Enterococci)

Usually resistant to:

• Metronidazole (except Clostridia)
